Windansea Beach Parking Lot Improvements

City of San Diego: 600 B Street, Suite 800, MS 908A, San Diego, CA 92101
Project Manager: Kevin Oliver
Total Project Cost: $230,000.00

Jim Neri was conscripted by the Friends of Windansea in 1997 to lead the community in reimagining the public use of Windansea Beach Park, a 1/8 mile long stretch of scenic coastline in La Jolla with a strong local presence, an assemblage of dilapidated improvements, and a small parking lot. From a community workshop focusing on the demands of an increasing population on this unique resource the “Design Guidelines, Erosion Control & Maintenance Plan for Windansea Beach”was born and later adopted by the City of San Diego in2000 as the master plan for improvements to Windansea Beach. Simple solutions were conceived by NLA to the problems of a lack of seating, increasing erosion due to new trails being blazed down the coastal slope, concentrated runoff eroding the bluff, and territorialism plaguing the beach parking lot, and were implemented through a combination of private donations and public grants over the following 15 years; resulting in improved pedestrian circulation and coastal access, and reduced urban runoff over the bluff. NLA served pro-bono to facilitate community workshops and process plans while working at cost to lead the design team in the preparation of construction documents, bid administration and construction administration.
